I've searched and searched, but can't find any similar mark in any books that I've come across. There are lots of crown marks, and a few "H & Co." marks, but none that combine the two. Any suggestions? ahawton@rep.scdsb.on.ca I have pictures of the tea set, if that'd help.

Hello,
Your web page looks very useful, so I was hoping you could possibly give me some advice. I've recently inherited several pieces of wooden furniture which previously had been stored in a house with no heating for about three years. With that in mind, I currently have all of the furniture in rooms with the heating also turned off, to keep the temperature and humidity approximately what it was, and plan to gradually bring the conditions to what they will be for the finished pieces (turning the heating up gradually, etc.) However, I am slightly concerned as many of the pieces have a musty smell inside the drawers/cabinets, and I'm wondering what the best method for removing this would be. as at the moment it rather makes many of the pieces unusable. Is this something which will fade as the pieces are brought up to a more normal house temperature, or do I need to take any sort of special action? There doesn't appear to be any kind of serious mildew or mold on any of the pieces.
Kris
Kris,
That smell is of biological activity on the surface and within the grain of the wood. The only way to permanently stop it is to wash (IMPORTANT: use a paintbrush, rubber gloves, and eye protection) with a very diluted (follow the instructions on the label) bleach/water solution. Repeat as necessary and follow up with a lemon oil treatment to replace the wood's natural oils.

I just read the article about NOT refinishing antique furniture. Please excuse me for not being very informed, but I have a few questions for you. First of all, I will tell you the short story of why I am asking questions. My girlfriend and her father decided to refinish a rocking chair that I do not know the age. It had a dark finish on that we began to strip. Unfortunately the task was very difficult even with using stripper. There is still a good amount of finish on it. My question is, is there a better way to strip it now? Also, was it worth stripping? It is over 25 years old, but that is about all that I know. I just know that it was made before I was born. I could use your feedback. Thanks, Ryan Wantz
Ryan,
Most folks call anything more than 20 years old antiques although true antiques have to be at least 100 years old. The article refers only to true antiques. Your 25 year old rocker isn't really antique, it's just used furniture so go ahead and strip it. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do the job so keep on using the stripper and lots of patient scraping. Make sure that you use eye protection and gloves.

My name is Terry Fletcher. I am a silver smith. I worked for Kirk-Stieff for 28 years until they were purchased by Lennox Corporation. Lennox subsequently closed the factory down. I worked for Lennox shortly thereafter until they fell on hard times. They sent me over sees to Malaysia several times but I could not continue the travel. I now have my own shop in Baltimore, Maryland and can be reached at 410 663-1500. I do silver repair and manufacture. I also do pewter work, but the expense is so great it is usually not worthwhile for a customer to have pewter repaired. Anyone having damaged or old silver they want to get rid of can call me, I may be able to help them out. Terry

Any info would be greatly appreciated. I also have a cup thats got a hairline fracture in it, could I put this in boiling milk, some of the pieces sound kind of hollow(mostly the ones with cracks in them)should I put all of the set in milk to strenghten it? Please advise. Thank you, Debbie

I have two statues, 19" tall, one is a bearded fisherman holding a sack over his shoulder, knee high boots, winter coat on, with a basket of fish next to his left leg. The other statue is a female, with a hat that has the ties hanging down to her shoulders. She is holding a platter of fish on her right hip, over her left shoulder she has draped a long shawl or fish net, she is bare footed, has a long sleeved blouse on with three buttons. Both statues seems to have a tree stump in back of them. The oval emblem on these statues says: (IN THE OVAL AT TOP) MARVAL (BOTTOM OF OVAL) IND.INC, in the center of the oval is a "C" in a circle. I would appreciate any information on these statues. Thank you, Marie MMETHENY@ICEWEB.NET

Hi, I have an antique Mug that was given to my grandparents from an antique shop owner many many years ago. I know nothing about this Mug and was hoping that maybe someone reading this might. It's a small mug, maybe 2 1/2 - 3 inches high. It has a picture of 2 little boys, dressed as horseracing jockeys and they are riding rocking horses. There is a phrase around the picture that says " A Close Finish " There is a picture of the sky in the background. On the Bottom of the mug, it is stamped in the middle "Germany" and right under that is the number 233. Not sure what any of it means, just guessing that the number might be part of a set. If anyone has any information they can give me, please write me at XxXxLittleExXxX@aol.com It would be greatly appreciated! Thx

can someone help me identify the manufacture in Germany that used a pyrmid with what appears to be a crown inside of it. this symbol is on a earthenware jar like piece.... the mouth is about three inches across and the jar is about three inces tall... it depicts three scenes..first is two gents with the bavarian hats and feathers looking on in profile position and the second is one of the gents standing behind what seems to be a bar maid squeezing her left breast... the third picture is the other gent in like position.. all depictions are raised and very colorful with a glazed finish..the inside of the jar is also glazed.....the background for the pictures is a very deep cobalt blue... the top rim of the jar has a metal ring pressed on it..... the bottom is inscribed with made in germany and the pyrmid with a crown in side.... i can only say as for the dat that it was brought back from germany 1939 and kept my my grandfather for all this time. thanks for reading any messages can be sent to gfritsch@cinergy.com

I have what a slant front desk that has three drawers; two 7" and the other 5". It stands about 38" high and is 29" wide. Opening the desk top reveals five equally sized square slots above three shorter, but wider slots. The middle slot has a small drawer. The desk has four ball and claw feet. The claws are two in number for each leg. The ball and claw design is only on the front of each leg. The sides follow the outline of the design, but is not destinguishable as a ball and claw. The back of the leg is smoth. There are no readable marks on it. It appears to have been refinished by someone who simply tried to restain over the original finish. It is structurally sound. I bought it for $15.00 at a yard sale. I do not know anything about collecting antiques. I simply buy what appeals to me and enjoy making something ugly pretty again. I enjoy working with wood furniture, but am definitely a green horn. I plan on re-finishing this desk. I would like to know what this desk might be and where I might find more information about it. Also, any tips on how tips on how to re-finish the desk would be very welcomed. Respectfully, Pete prjb@prodigy.net

Tarnish-looking spots appeared which I've tried everything to remove--toothpaste, baking soda, traditional silver polish, lemon. Nothing works. I'm heartbroken. I have a dinnerware set and I can't figure out who the maker is??!!! can anyone help??? it consists of 26 pieces, 8 plates, 8 soup plates, 8 salad plates, gravy boat attached to the saucer underneath, a vegetable bowl, 3 small oval platters, I medium size platter and 1 large platter. I am not sure if any pieces are missing...??? the color overall is cream with dark pink/light pink/white roses with yellow and blue daisies and some green sprigs of something surrounding the rose. this pattern continues around each piece at the top as well as a light blue scrolling type of design with yellow accents. there is a thin gold line followed by a thick bluish/purple line followed by another gold line of medium width all around the top edge of each piece. the edges of the porcelain are in a scroll type pattern also. on the bottom of each piece is a gold crown with a cross on top, exactly like the of crown derby porcelain, but without the swords, and the word handgemalt. on 3 different pieces though, the crown and the word are in a bluish/purple color, and it looks like it is over the gold color. also, I finally found another mark on the square round vegetable bowl...the #'s 34.R830 are imprinted on the bottom with no color except of the porcelain itself (cream) my grandma purchased this in Germany, and was told that the factory closed in 1935. that is all the information that I have...please help me if you have any related info, I would greatly appreciate it!!! thank you...Tara

I have a beautiful Bavaria dinnerware set I recently bought at an estate sale. I have been searching the internet for information on it and have come up with little information. What I have come up with is the pattern number and the description of it. The set is in perfect condition, having no cracks, chips or nicks. On the bottom of each item contains: Crown Heiden Bavaria in green print with the crown logo and a number as it relates to each item. The pattern number is: CWH7 by Crown Heiden (CWHCWH7) Description: pink/gray flowers, rim, gold trim and the edges are scalloped. I believed to be a complete set containing: 12 dinner plates, 12 salad bowls, 12 teacups and 12 saucers, 12 desert plates?(smaller than the dinner plates), 12 icecream bowls?(smaller than the salad bowls), 3 oblong platters-each smaller than the previous, 1 gravy boat, 1 teapot with cover. What I am looking for is; the history of these items, where it was produced and by who, the years they may have been manufactured, and how much it possibly is worth. lconway_37@hotmail.com

To the party that entered comment on September 3, 2002 regarding Eschenbach China, Roswitha pattern. My father purchased a set of this china pattern for my mother when he was serving in Germany during WWII. My research to date would indicated that Roswitha is the pattern name. The china is ivory in color with a black band and gold leaf design around the edge. There is also a basket weave design in the china that is approx 1" wide. Some of my pieces are marked US Zone and others are not. Someone else entered a comment on June 4, 2002 asking the same question. They received a reply on July 2, 2002 that indicated that the china was made after the end of WWII while US troops still occupied part of Germany. From what my dad has told me, this sounds correct. Dad returned home from Europe in December 1945. Ths china order did not arrive here until October 1951! I am currently looking to replace a 7" salad plate in this pattern. If you have one and would be interested in selling it please contact me. Hope this helps!
I inherited a night or side stand, and it has a lable "F.B.M. Company Hoboken NJ. #3692". The inside of the drawer is lined with white milk glass. Help! I've acquired several lovely Limoges pieces in an estate sale and need to identify the pattern. They are Guerin-Pouyat Elite works with the red Elite Works SM with the little guy's head. Another green mark is very similar. It has a similar crest with sm, guy's head, with the full word "Limoges" above it and the word "ELITE" all caps stamped OVER the Limoges part. Under the crest it says France. The pattern on the dishes is pink full-blown single roses with green leaves, interspersed with a gold, black, and green swag-looking thing with a pink daisy-shaped flower in the middle of two gold feather looking things. There are 5 swag things and 10 roses on the small bowl. The edge is gold gilt. From the edge, the pattern goes: gold gilt rim, a circle of gold u-shaped doodads, then the pale green ring, then the swags and roses. No center design, just plain ivory porcelain. Any info you have would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Hey everyone, I am working on a project for 4-H, and it is refinishing a chair. I am 13 and have never worked on refinishing chairs before. It is just a western style desk type chair, and I want to put a western cushion on it. It has straps on it to hold the cushion under neath. They are like the straps that hold down loads on semi trucks. It has a back with 3 horizontal bars and has round arms and lags with carved edges. i have already sanded off the finish with 100 grit paper, but know what do I do?? I only have 2 weeks, please help!!
You can buy a can of wood stain (oil stain is best for beginners) and follow the directions on the can. Stain will help make the chair a uniform color. When the stain is dry brush on a clear finish. Two coats of varnish or polyurethane is good, three coats is better. Always read and follow the directions on the cans. Remember that the key to a good job is preparation. Remove all sanding dust and have everything that you need ready so that when you start to brush the last coat you won't have to stop for anything.

I recently received china service for twelve from my grandmother. My mom is pretty certain that the china originally belonged to my great grandmother or great grandmother. Someone passed the china along to my grandmother as a wedding present in the early 1940's. I thought the china was Royal Bonn. It looks like Royal Bonn. The front is very ornate and is rimmed in gold. There is a picture of a man and a woman in the center. The back of each piece bears a crown. "Royal Bon" is written in script. The back also says "Fine China Warranted 22 KT. Gold." Even though the name is spelled with just one "n", is this still Royal Bonn? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. kstivers1990@charter.net

Hello there, We inherited 4 pieces of office furniture made by Emil J. Paidar Co., Chicago, from a doctor who retired. I realize that Paidar is most known for barber shop furnishings, and yet these pieces were in use in a doctor's office from, I would guess, around the 1930s or 40s until the early 1990s. We cannot find any information about them online - all searches for Paidar result in barber chairs! There are two rather large cabinets, which are made of solid wood with glued-on wood grain veneer, with dark glass in the cabinet doors and dark glass shelving. Drawers are wooden exterior, metal interior for sterility. One of the cabinets has an interior working lamp. Also included were a wastebasket made of the same wood with the same veneer, and a leather-topped stool which spins to be adjusted for height. All of these pieces have a very art-deco appearance. They are lovely, solid pieces of craftsmanship, and highly unusual. Any information or speculation about their worth would be extremely helpful. We can take photos with our digital camera if that would help you help us! Many thanks for your time and information. We can be emailed at cathywho@yahoo.com

I have a number of 1984 Rogers silverplate flatware knives and forks. Several are from SL and GH Rogers of Hartford CT. It is a very simple, almost rustic pattern, possibly the basic pattern that was used to forge a print on to form another pattern. It is simple and beautiful. Although all of the forks and knives have different markers on them (rogers and co., 1847 Wm and Rogers, "anchors" Rogers 12, R and a symbol like an eye, and Simeon L. and George H. Rogers, Hartford, Conn.) the pattern is the same or only with a SLIGHT difference. I am unable to fing this pattern in books, websites or anywhere, and I want to get its value! idcrisis49@msn.com

Where can I get a 1805-1905 Karpen mahogany desk and matching chair appraised? It was my great-grandmothers--is very ornate with face and flower carvings on all 4 legs and around 3 sides of desk, as well as desk "backboard" and chair back and matching chair. Original finish, excellent condition--beautiful, but can't find a source to appraise it for either insurance value or possible sale. Does anyone have any idea what this might be worth? Thank you!!

I am trying to find out the origin/artist of a painting that my sister owns. It is about 5 feet long and maybe 2 feet high. It has four pairs of knights on horseback led by a single man on horseback. All of the knights and the horses are dressed in brightly colored decorated armor. Each one if very differnt and seem to represent some sort of coat of arms. The man in front is dressed in armor but wears no helmet. He is blond and wears a crown of flowers on his hair. He is carrying a yellow flag with a two-headed phoenix. There are things written on the painting that appear to be in German but it is calligraphy which makes it very hard to read. Each of the 8 knights are wearing something different on his helmet with face masks. It appears to be a watercolor but the colors are brilliant and the detail in this painting is excellent. I would love to know something about it if anyone has even a clue. Send any info you might have to LeslieBuscher@aol.com . thank you

I recently purchased what I thought was a picture in a frame from a garage sale for $1,when I went to clean it, I discovered that it was a painting on canvas and in the upper right hand corner the artists signiture and date is on it. I cant read the whole signiture but the last name is Oliver and the date is 1944. The painting is a boy with his arm around his sister(it appears)and the sister has a kitten on her lap. The painting is in very good condition, There is alot of detail and the subjects in the painting look so real that when you look at it, they appear to be looking back at you. The frame it is in is wood with a gold inlay and a paper backing, it's much heavier and better made than any other wood frame I currently own. There is a sticker on the back of it that reads (This hand colored Art Gravure has been enriched by a skilled artist whith delicate tints and colorings to help the interpretations of the subject portrayed. SUNGOTT ART STUDIOS, New York, Style No.380). The painting and frame together is a little over 17 1/2 inches in width by a little over 21 inches in heigth. I am seeking information about this painting and whether or not it has any value. I am also seeking information about SUNGOTT ART STUDIOS in New York and how I could contact them. My e-mail address is chrissy833@aol.com if you would like to contact me or I'll wait for your response on this website. THANK YOU! Christina Clark

I have an inherited an extremely large collection of mid 1800's china. 12 Soup plates, 12 luncheon plates,Large Soup tureen, covered and uncovered serving dishes, platters of several sizes and gravy boat. These were from an ancesteral pre-civil war sugar plantation. I must have 1/4 of the pieces...Others must have inherited the dinner plates and cups and saucers as I don't have any of those pieces. They are all white china , scalloped edges with gold trim (A 1/8 inch trim and then just inside that a thin line of gold trim). The rims are decorated with 2 ornate motifs alternated with different flowers all done in gold- violet or pansy, morning glory, dogwood or apple blossom, wild rose and cabbage roses. There does not seem to be any set order of the flowers on the pieces. These flowers and motifs seem to be stamped or tranfers. On the inside trim is another thin gold line. This entire rim is about 1 ½ inches around. The serving dish handles seem to be long curving gold raised leaves, and the knobs on top of the covers are large raised oak type leaves with one large and one small shapped nut/pinecone/acorn covered in gold. Except for the leave shapes there are no other raised areas. A 2 inch ornate snowflake shaped round gold medallion is in the centers of the bowls and plates. There are no markings on the bottom, except for some various scraches in the glaze, some times c some times s or 8 shapes. The serving dish has 1 0 in the bottom. Family history says it is French Limoges and it was ordered to be sent over for a special dinner party, celbrating the lady of the houses brother's election to govenor. You may eail me if you have any clues as to what type of china it is that I have . thanks, Ljscraps@yahoo.com

The cup and saucer are both gold trimmed. The flowers on each are small purple flowers with some greenery around them. There is also a look of "gold spraying" (that is the only way I really know to describe it) around the top lip of the cup. The sticker on the bottom of the saucer simply says NORLEANS Japan. It does not give the name of the patter at all. Does anyone have any idea what pattern this may be or any information on it? If so, please email me at acw332000@yahoo.com Thanks so much and happy antiquing!!

I have been on the lookout for Thonet mid-century pieces for some time but I am stumped by this one. It's a rocking chair, in the classic Thonet style, but doesn't show the age of the very old...and very valuable...antique ones. My guess, from the wear, is that it was made 1960-1990. I have seen the many knock-offs of this chair, but I think this one is genuine Thonet. It is light in color. It is clearly marked "Thonet" on the back of the seat, with "6T" impressed into several parts. The parts under the seat are all bent wood, not cut-to-shape or laminate. The ends of these pieces all taper beautifully. Some parts are fixed with metal screws, others with nearly-invisible wooden pegs. Can anyone help me date this chair? Does it have value? Thanks so much for your time and expertise. Squid

I am trying to find out any information about a porcelain statue of two horses with a rider in a green toga with markings 11943 and 10 on the bottom with a fancy crossed Capitol letter L. It has some words on the bottom that are not very clear that look like moda casa and #3 and some long word that starts with casah... This statue was given to me and I am just trying to find out any history about it. It is quite large measuring 14'' x 14". The detail is beautifuly painted one horse is bending down like he is drinking, the other has a lifted head looking in the distance. The rider looks like a young boy with longer hair and headband. The horses both have a bridle. if anyone could let me know anything about this statue I would appreciate it so much.

I need some help in locating a value on an Antique Chair. It is a red velvet arm chair. There are brass buttons surrounding the back of the chair. It is dark in color and has roses carved on the top of the chair. The seat has the brass buttons along the front. The back legs are square and slant slightlyto the back. The front are claw footed. Everything is all original. We think it dates back to the 1920's or earlier. My grandmother called in an antique dealer that offered her $500, and said he would reupholster it and sell it. I did not think that reupholstering it would be a good idea because the red velvet is original. This is a very elegant, beautiful chair that I cannot seem to find anywhere. Please help me if you can. My e-mail address is jsshepherd@insightbb.com.
